Our Meetings take place between 11am - 12noon every Sunday. Some people may already
be sitting quietly in the Meeting Room when you arrive. Feel free to sit anywhere,
perhaps leaving a few seats near the door for latecomers.
Meetings are not led by anyone. Sometimes they are totally silent. At other times,
one or more people may feel moved to speak during our hour together. This "ministry"
is received in silence, leaving everyone space to consider it.
Ministry , unlike a sermon, has not normally been planned before the Meeting begins.
It may be a comment, a reading or occasionally a prayer. We look for the underlying
truth, regardless of the words used.
Quakers have no creed and nothing is routinely said or
sung every week. The Meeting for Worship takes place around a silence in which we
seek to come nearer to God and each other. We share the stillness of the Meeting.
Nobody is expected to say anything.
The silence might seem strange at first because everyday life is so full of noise
and movement. During Meeting, you might find yourself distracted by outside noise
or roving thoughts. Just bring yourself back to the silence within the room, which
can be very comforting and calming.
Each week, two Members will be responsible for the Meeting for Worship. They will
mark the end of the Meeting by shaking hands. At this point, you may wish to shake
hands with the person sitting next to you.
Notices are then read out. Afterwards, there is time to chat over tea /coffee. You
are very welcome to join in.
